The Thomas D. Gelehrter Lectureship in Medical Genetics

A lectureship that builds upon Dr. Gelehrter’s career dedicated to promoting excellence in research, education, and care in Medical Genetics will be an enduring legacy that continues to raise awareness and improve this vital field.

The Neel Fellowships

The James V Neel Fellowship Fund was raised from contributions by alumni and friends of the Department of Human Genetics for the support of graduate education. In line with Dr. Neel’s ideals, applicants will be selected first and foremost based on quality, and secondly, on need – to put these funds where they will do the most good for the students and the Department.

There will be two awards, one for Ph.D. students and one for Genetic Counseling students.

The James V. Neel Doctoral Fellowship

This award will be made to a student after his/her 3rd or 4th year; i.e., for students in their 4th or 5th year of PhD training. Foreign students are eligible for this award. Selection of recipients will be by the Education Committee of the Department. The Department may decide to provide more than one award in a given year, or not to make the award.

The James V. Neel Genetic Counseling Fellowship

Genetic counseling students receive no support and must pay $24,000 in out-of-state tuition during the (now) two-year program. One award in the amount of $5000 toward the student’s tuition will be made to a 2nd year student. Selection will be by the Education Committee of the Department.

Both awards will be presented at the Annual James V. Neel Memorial Lecture

At the discretion of the Chair, funds in this account may also be used in support of graduate education if needed.

Graduate Education

Graduate students are essential members of faculty-led basic research teams. This fund provides support to graduate students pursuing PhDs within the School of Medicine. An investment in the education of these talented students helps cultivate the careers of scientists of the future as they strive to apply breakthroughs in research to the prevention, treatment, and cure of human disease

Carole McTague Genetic Counseling Enrichment Fund

This gift was made possible by John McTague, in memory of Carole McTague, a distinguished graduate of our Genetic Counseling Program. This fund is used to help support student participation in national and regional meetings, student participation in genetic field clinics, student travel to out-of-state summer internship rotations, and guest lectures on topics related to genetic counseling.
