The Masters degree (M.S.) in Human Genetics provides focused training in general and human genetics.This is a competitive program and only a few eligible students per year are selected.Applications are online through the Rackham School of Graduate Studies.
Prerequisites for admission:
1. The B.S. or B.A. degree.(Most applicants have a major in the biological sciences but this is not required.)
2. Transcripts, including a course in genetics.
3. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores (for the general tests).
4. Three letters of recommendation.
Degree Requirements:
1. 12 hours of coursework in Human Genetics.
HG541, HG542 and HG544 are all required.At least 2 semesters of HG 821/822 (Student Seminar) are required.In the latter, students must present a seminar in at least one of the semesters. Additional HG courses can be HG803 (Instructor’s permission is required if HG541 has not been completed previously), or courses cross-listed with other departments such as Integrative Genomics (see Mechanisms in Physiology).
2. From 0 to 10 hrs of research in HG800 with a primary or secondary HG faculty member (990 level research, which is pre-candidate for the Ph.D., cannot count towards the M.S. degree).
3. Additional appropriate courses from other science departments to total 30 credits (see the Ph.D. curriculum for a list of some of the courses students take).
Tuition for the M.S., as well as stipend and other expenses, are the responsibility of the student.
